Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid homage to Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan on his birth anniversary, hailing him as one of India’s most fearless voices for democracy and social justice.
The Prime Minister highlighted Narayan’s pivotal role in inspiring a socio-political awakening across the country through his call for ‘Sampoorna Kranti’ (Total Revolution).
In a series of posts on X, PM Modi described Loknayak JP as a tireless champion who dedicated his life to empowering ordinary citizens and strengthening constitutional values.
He noted that Narayan’s vision of a nation built on equality, ethics, and good governance ignited mass movements, particularly in Bihar and Gujarat, which challenged the then Congress government at the Centre.
These movements, the Prime Minister said, led to the imposition of the Emergency, during which the Constitution was trampled upon.
On the occasion, PM Modi shared rare excerpts from Loknayak JP’s ‘Prison Diary,’ written during his solitary confinement in the Emergency period.
The diary, he said, reflects Narayan’s anguish and unwavering faith in democracy. Quoting Narayan, the Prime Minister highlighted his poignant words: “Every nail driven into the coffin of Indian democracy is like a nail driven into my heart.”
