In the Philippines huge mound of garbage collapsed in a waste segregation facility in a central Philippine city, killing one person and leaving at least 27 others missing, said police today.
Police, firefighters and disaster-mitigation personnel retrieved eight people, including workers at the facility, who were trapped on Thursday afternoon in the avalanche of garbage and debris in the village of Binaliw in Cebu City.
A rescued female worker at the landfill died while being brought to a hospital, and the Search and rescue efforts for at least 27 other people are underway.
Jaylord Antigua, a 31-year-old office worker in the landfill, said the collapse of the mountain of garbage unfolded rapidly without warning and in good weather.
The avalanche of rubbish destroyed his office, where he managed to extricate himself with bruises in his face and arms by crawling under the rubble and debris.
βI saw a light and crawled toward it in a hurry because I feared there will be more landslides,β Antigua told The Associated Press. βIt was traumatic. I feared that it was my end so this is my second life.β
