In Indonesia, death toll has risen to 38 after a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Flores today. The powerful quake was followed by dozens of aftershocks, as rescue teams continued efforts to reach the worst-hit areas.
Tsunami waves measuring less than one metre were reported in several parts of the country as well. The tsunami alert was withdrawn around three hours after the earthquake.
Earlier in Maumere, the main town in Sikka Regency on Flores Island, rescue teams recovered 20 bodies and found six injured people. Two others were reported trapped under debris.
Officials said, people are still believed to be trapped inside buildings in several affected areas. Landslides have also been reported, with debris blocking roads and making rescue operations more difficult.
