Paris police has imposed an overnight curfew in two areas of the French capital following a weekend of severe rioting that targeted city halls, other public buildings and thousands of businesses across the country.
The unrest was among France’s worst in years. The order, issued yesterday, aims to protect people and property from violence and looting.
It prohibits people from entering or remaining in Place de la République, where rioting broke out on Saturday, and the shopping district of Les Halles, which was targeted by looters.
The curfew will remain in effect from 11 pm yesterday until 6 am today. Paris police also announced a ban on gatherings and demonstrations from 8 pm.
