Cough syrup deaths. Sresan Pharma owner G. Ranganathan arrested in Chennai.

G. Ranganathan, owner of Kancheepuram-based Sresan Pharmaceuticals, was arrested by a Madhya Pradesh Special Investigation Team (SIT) in Chennai on Thursday morning for allegedly producin contaminated cough syrup linked to the deaths of several children of at least 22 children in M.P..

Sresan Pharma is accused of manufacturing the toxic Coldrif cough syrup linked to 22 deaths in M.P. so far, according to M.P. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav. Three more children are still in critical condition. 

Following the owner’s arrest, the SIT and the Chennai police jointly conducted a search at the company’s 2,000 sq.ft. manufacturing unit located along the Chennai-Bengaluru Highway, to examine production records and samples.

The facility has been sealed and the company’s registered office in Kodambakkam remains shut.

Residents in the area said the office, once frequented by visitors, was cleared out last week, with staff seen shifting equipment and computers late at night.

Two staff members, manager Jayaraman and lab assistant Mageshwari, were also apprehended by the police and interrogated in connection with the case.

Laboratory analysis confirmed that the Coldrif cough syrup contained toxic substances, according to a report from the Tamil Nadu Director of Drugs Control submitted to the M.P. government on October 4.

Following this, the M.P. government imposed a ban on the sale of the product as well as all other medicines manufactured by Sresan Pharma.
