UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres welcomes announcement of ceasefire by US, Iran.

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres welcomed the announcement of a two-week ceasefire by the United States and Iran and urged all the parties involved in the ongoing conflict in West Asia to comply with their obligations under international law and abide by the terms of the ceasefire.

In a statement, he stressed that an end to hostilities is urgently needed to protect the lives of people and alleviate human suffering.

Guterres’ statement came after US President Donald Trump announced a conditional two-week pause in planned attacks tied to reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a development that came as a big relief to people across the world.

Guterres “calls on all the parties to the current conflict in the Middle East to comply with their obligations under international law and to abide by the terms of the ceasefire in order to pave the way toward a lasting and comprehensive peace in the region,” Dujarric said in a statement.

The statement came after US President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that he agreed “to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks.”
