North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has overseen tests of a cruise missile and other weapons systems of the country’s new naval destroyer. State-run media reported today that Kim observed the tests of the 5,000-ton warship Kang Kon on Friday.
The report said the tests were conducted to assess the ship’s combat systems. The video showed successive missile launches from the vessel. Kim emphasised the need to speed up projects to maintain and expand North Korea’s war deterrent and combat capabilities.
The report also said Kim affirmed that the North will demonstrate through more obvious actions the political will and determination to have absolute power.
Last month, Pyongyang commissioned the Choe Hyon, a destroyer of the same class as Kang Kon. It plans to build two destroyers of 5,000 tons or more a year, including 10,000-ton cruisers over the next five years.
