An earthquake of magnitude 5.9 struck Indonesia’s Flores region early this morning, with the latest tremor occurring at a depth of around 10 kilometres.
The earthquake comes days after a powerful 7.7-magnitude quake struck eastern Indonesia. The country’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) today said the death toll from a series of earthquakes has risen to 54, as authorities continue to assess the extent of casualties and damage.
Rescue teams are providing medical assistance to hundreds of injured people, while the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said aftershocks continue in the affected areas.
Authorities have deployed land, sea and air transport, including 11 aircraft and helicopters, to deliver relief supplies and support evacuation operations in remote areas, including Palue Island in Sikka Regency.
