Head of the Iranian parliament’s National Security Commission Ebrahim Azizi has warned Ukraine that a reported attack on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea will not go unanswered.
In a social media post, Azizi said any attack on Iran comes with a cost and suggested Ukraine would face a response. His remarks came after Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi accused Ukraine of striking the vessel, killing one sailor and injuring another. In a social media post, Araghchi alleged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy ordered the attack.
Iran earlier summoned Ukraine’s acting charge d’affaires in Tehran to lodge a formal protest over the incident. The diplomatic protest followed Zelenskyy’s announcement that Ukraine had carried out long-range strikes on military-related targets in Russia, including in the Caspian Sea.
“This action by Ukraine was an absolutely illegal and unjustified act, contrary to the Charter of the United Nations, as well as a dangerous act of adventurism that will certainly not go unanswered by us,” the ministry’s spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said in a weekly press briefing, adding that the consequences of Ukraine’s action “will certainly be unforeseen.”
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Sunday warned that his country would respond to a deadly attack by Ukraine on an Iranian ship in the Caspian Sea.
It came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Kyiv had carried out long-range strikes in the Caspian Sea against vessels transporting military cargo involving Iran, underscoring the increasingly international dimensions of Russia’s war in Ukraine.
