Peter Magyar Sworn In as Hungary’s New Prime Minister.

Peter Magyar, a centre-right politician, was sworn in as Hungary’s new Prime Minister after winning a decisive victory over nationalist leader Viktor Orbán in the April 12 election.

The result ended Orbán’s 16 years in power and gave Magyar’s Tisza Party a constitutional majority, enabling him to reverse key reforms introduced by the previous government.

The 45-year-old leader has promised to tackle corruption and undo policies enacted under Orbán’s rule to control the judiciary, the media and other sectors.

Mr. Magyar has also pledged to restore Hungary’s strained relationship with the European Union. Under Orban’s rule, tensions with the bloc increased as Hungary moved closer to Moscow and opposed EU efforts to support Ukraine against its war with Russia.

Magyar, who has pledged a sweeping anti-corruption drive, aims to broker a deal with EU leaders to unblock billions of euros in suspended EU funding.
