Philippines. Around 20 feared trapped after under-construction building collapses near Manila.

In Philippines, around 20 people are feared to still be trapped under the rubble of a nine-storey under construction building that collapsed early this morning in a city near capital, Manila.

A search operation has so far rescued 24 people from the site in Angeles and two from a nearby hotel that was struck by falling debris, with no deaths reported.

Officials are now investigating the cause of the collapse. Many of those trapped are thought to be construction workers who were unable to escape in time.

Nearly 700 rescuers, including firefighters and police personnel, searched through concrete slabs and twisted metal overnight, as anxious relatives of the missing waited at the scene. Officials said the rescue operations would continue until all those trapped are accounted for.
