US President Donald Trump has said that the United States and the European Union are united in ensuring that Iran never acquires nuclear weapons.
In a social media post, Trump said he held a great call with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and discussed the situation in West Asia.
Trump said both sides agreed that a regime which kills its own people cannot be allowed to possess a weapon capable of killing millions. The conversation also focused on trade ties between the US and the European Union.
Trump said he urged the EU to fulfil commitments on tariff reductions under the trade understanding reached in Turnberry, Scotland.
He added that the EU has been given time until the United States’ 250th Independence anniversary to implement the agreement, failing which higher tariffs could be imposed.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also confirmed the conversation in her social media post. She said both leaders discussed developments in West Asia and coordination with regional partners.
Von der Leyen reiterated that Iran must never possess nuclear weapons, saying recent events have underlined the risks to regional stability and global security.
She also said both sides reviewed progress on the EU-US trade agreement and expressed commitment to implementing tariff reductions by early July.
