US President Donald Trump has said the United States remains engaged in negotiations with Iran but insisted that any agreement must permanently prevent Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.
It was stated by Trump at the White House that nuclear non-proliferation remains the central objective of his administration’s approach. While stressing that Iran would never be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon under any future deal.
The 2015 nuclear agreement was criticised as a pathway to an Iranian nuclear weapon, with it being asserted that any new accord would be fundamentally different.
Previous US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities were defended, with the sites said to have been “obliterated” and kept under close surveillance. A warning was also issued that a swift response would be carried out if American troops were targeted, while diplomatic engagement with Iran’s leadership was said to remain possible in support of a long-term agreement.
Trump’s remarks came amid continued diplomatic efforts to reach a long-term arrangement on Iran’s nuclear programme and regional security issues. The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important energy chokepoints, carrying a significant share of global oil shipments.
