US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed in Abu Dhabi, reaffirming America’s commitment to the Gulf nation’s security.
The meeting focused on the recent US-Iran diplomatic breakthrough, maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, and regional stability. Rubio assured continued US support to its Gulf partners amid evolving security dynamics.
He stressed that lasting peace in West Asia is not possible as long as Iranian-backed proxy groups continue missile and drone attacks. Rubio also clarified that discussions on a Lebanon ceasefire are separate from ongoing talks with Iran.
The visit is part of Rubio’s three-day tour of the Gulf region, including Kuwait and Bahrain, aimed at consulting key allies following recent US-Iran technical talks in Switzerland.
He noted that while Gulf nations support peace efforts, significant challenges remain, describing the current framework as a work in progress. Rubio also ruled out any immediate plans for financial contributions from regional partners towards Iran’s reconstruction.
The US Secretary of State said Iran faces a choice between continuing its current policies or pursuing a more constructive role in the region.
