US says it launched new wave of strikes on Iran aimed at protecting vessels in Strait of Hormuz.

The United States has said it has launched a new wave of strikes on Iran aimed at protecting vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

The US military said it carried out a second wave of strikes on Iran yesterday aimed at degrading Tehran’s ability to target vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. President Donald Trump is also weighing options to expand the US military operation to loosen Tehran’s grip on the critical waterway.

Air defences were activated in Tehran early this morning, and residents were awakened by a loud explosion. The development came after Iran claimed it had struck US military targets in the region, including in Bahrain and Kuwait.

The US military said it had disabled an empty oil tanker sailing towards Kharg Island, an economic lifeline for Iran. It marked the first vessel to be disabled since the US naval blockade went back into effect. An Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Tehran has no plans for negotiations with the United States.

President Donald Trump said on social media that Iran had released an American woman detained since December 2024 and praised Tehran’s gesture of goodwill
